The Castle of Mey is six miiles west of John O'Groats
For an afternoon, we'll explore the medieval castle, Castle of Mey, that was purchased and restored by the Queen Mother in 1952.
It overlooks the infamous Pentland Firth where the Atlantic swirls with the North Sea.
First built sometime during 1566-1572, the castle, also called Barrogill, was owned by George Sinclair, the 4th Earl of Caithness and Highland chief of the Clan Sinclair. Now owned by King Charles, the castle invites visitors to explore its long history.

There is much for you to explore before or after Scriptoria. At John O'Groats, only six miles across the infamous Pentland Firth separate you from Scotland's Northern Isles--that is, the Orkney Islands and the much farther north, Shetland Island.
In fact, on a clear day, you'll see the Orkney Islands. These islands offer visitors a range of activities from investigating ancient ruins of the Ness of Brodgar or the Ring of Brodgar Stone Circle to Kirkwall's stately St. Magnus Cathedral.
For island travels, you'd begin with the NorthLink Ferries from John O'Groats or another nearby harbor.
